The first desserts were candies, made from fruits or nuts rolled in honey. It was not until the middle ages, when sugar was manufactured, people began to enjoy more sweets, even then sugar was so expensive that it was only for the wealthy on special occasions.
In Western societies dessert is a course that typically comes at the end of a meal, usually consisting of sweet food.The word comes from the French language as ”dessert “and this from the French term “desservir”, “to clear the table” and “to serve.” Common desserts include biscuits, cakes, pies, pastries. Traditionally Fruit was also to be eaten with the dessert. In Russia, breakfast foods such as Bliny and Oladi ( a homemade thin yeast pancake) and Syrniki (cottage cheese pancakes) served with honey and jam are also popular as desserts.
The word ”dessert” is most commonly used for this course in Australia, America, Canada, New Zealand and Ireland, while sweet, pudding or afters may be alternative terms used in the England and some other Commonwealth countries
Eliminating sweet foods is a strategy used in weight control contributing to well being, in order to reduce the amount of calories, carbohydrates, or fat consumed.
There are people who think that a meal can only be completed if there is a dessert. However the fact is that most desserts out there are not something healthy. There are just too much salt, sugar and fat. As a result, you should eat desserts which are good for your health. This is even more important if you want to lose weight.
You may want to know what kinds of desserts are considered healthier. Be careful that desserts which are of low fat content do not necessarily mean they are something healthy. In most cases, you will tend to eat twice as much of the dessert if it is low fat dessert.
Fresh fruit is certainly a good dessert.and these days no need to be boring. There are so many beautiful fruits, this is my favorite for all ages
Chargrilled Fruit Kebabs with Spiced Yoghurt
(Use whatever fruit is in season and plentiful in place of the following)
100gms cleaned watermelon
100gms cleaned pineapple
100gms honey dew melon
100gms fresh strawberries
250 gms natural yoghurt
1 pkt bamboo skewers if you don’t have the metal ones
2 gms cinnamon
10 mls orange juice
20 gms honey
Cut fruit into 4 cm cubes
Remove the stem from the strawberries and cut them in half if necessary
Place fruit evenly on skewers with one piece of each fruit and repeat to leave approximately 5 cm and each end of the skewer
Mix the honey, cinnamon and orange juice with the yoghurt and place in a ramekin dish
Spray Canola on the bbq and put skewers on ensuring the wooden stick do not burn, lightly chargrill each side so the fruit softens but not to the point that it comes away from the skewer
Place on a platter and serve the skewers immediately with breakfast, lunch or dinner
If you never allow yourself to indulge in naughty desserts sometimes you will feel ripped off. So go ahead have it but in moderation, Remember its what you do 95 percent of the time, if you are trying to loose weight, just make sure you throw in some extra exercise into your day or week.
